Fees and take-home
Etsy Fee Calculator
Estimate Etsy seller fees and net take-home for a US shop selling in USD. Covers the $0.20 listing fee for both initial listings and automatic renewal on sale (auto-renew), the transaction fee, Etsy Payments processing, and Offsite Ads. Does NOT include currency conversion, VAT, Etsy Plus, Pattern, or Etsy Ads (PPC).
Formula
- Listing fee total = (Active listings + Number of sales) * $0.20
- Active listings cost = Active listings * $0.20 (initial $0.20 fee per listing, valid for 4 months or until sold)
- Auto-renew cost = Number of sales * $0.20 (each sale triggers Etsy's automatic renewal on sale and a new $0.20 listing fee unless auto-renew is turned off)
- Transaction fee = Sale price * Number of sales * 6.5%
- Payment processing = Sale price * Number of sales * 3% + Number of sales * $0.25
- Offsite Ads fee = Sale price * Number of sales * Offsite Ads share * mode rate (excluded = 0%, standard = 15%, mandatory = 12%)
- Total Etsy fees = Listing fee total + Transaction fee + Payment processing + Offsite Ads fee
- Net take-home = Gross revenue - Total Etsy fees
- Effective fee rate = Total Etsy fees / Gross revenue * 100
Examples
- $29 listing with 100 sales, 10 active listings, Offsite Ads excluded: listing fee total = (10 + 100) * $0.20 = $22.00. Transaction fee = $188.50, payment processing = $112.00, Offsite Ads = $0. Total Etsy fees about $322.50, net take-home about $2,577.50 from $2,900 gross (11.1% effective fee rate).
- Same scenario with 20% of sales referred by standard Offsite Ads (15%): Offsite Ads cost = $2,900 * 20% * 15% = $87. Total fees about $409.50, effective rate about 14.1%.
- Same scenario with mandatory Offsite Ads (12%) and 20% referred share: Offsite Ads cost = $2,900 * 20% * 12% = $69.60. Total fees about $392.10, effective rate about 13.5%.
- Digital download seller with 1 active listing and 200 sales (auto-renew on): listing fee total = (1 + 200) * $0.20 = $40.20. The single listing renews 200 times because each sale triggers automatic renewal.
When to use this calculator
- Estimate Etsy take-home before listing a new product.
- Compare Etsy take-home with the Gumroad, Payhip, or Lemon Squeezy rows in the Platform Take-Home Calculator.
- See how Offsite Ads participation mode (excluded, standard, or mandatory) changes your effective fee rate.
- Plan whether to keep auto-renew on for high-sales listings.
Common mistakes
- Treating the $0.20 listing fee as a one-time charge. With Etsy's auto-renew on sale (the default), each sale triggers another $0.20 listing fee.
- Forgetting the $0.25 fixed fee per transaction, which hurts low-price items the most.
- Treating Offsite Ads and Etsy Ads as the same thing; Offsite Ads is a referral cut on ads Etsy runs off-platform, Etsy Ads is opt-in pay-per-click promotion inside Etsy search.
- Swapping the 15% standard rate and the 12% mandatory rate. Standard (15%) applies to shops that opt in below the annual sales threshold. Mandatory (12%) applies to shops at or above the threshold; participation is required.
- Counting only the transaction fee and ignoring payment processing, which is roughly the same size on most sales.
Frequently asked questions
What does this calculator estimate?
It estimates Etsy's main seller fees for a US shop selling in USD via Etsy Payments: the $0.20 listing fee (for both active listings and Etsy's automatic renewal on sale), the 6.5% transaction fee, payment processing, and Offsite Ads. It does NOT include currency conversion, VAT, sales tax, Etsy Plus or Pattern subscriptions, or Etsy Ads (the pay-per-click promoted listings). Always cross-check the current rate on Etsy's official Sell page.
How is the $0.20 listing fee charged, and what is auto-renew on sale?
Etsy charges $0.20 each time a listing is created or renewed. A listing stays active for 4 months or until it sells. Etsy's default is automatic renewal on sale (auto-renew), so each sale triggers another $0.20 listing fee on top of the original. This calculator models both with (Active listings + Number of sales) * $0.20. If you turn auto-renew off, you only pay for the initial listing plus any manual relistings, so set Number of sales lower than your true sales count or treat the auto-renew row as zero by adjusting inputs.
Does this work the same for single-quantity handmade items and multi-quantity listings?
Mostly yes, but the meaning of Active listings differs. Multi-quantity listings (digital downloads, stocked items, made-to-order with quantity greater than one) stay live and auto-renew with each sale, so the (Active listings + Number of sales) * $0.20 model fits directly. Single-quantity handmade items end when sold; another $0.20 listing fee only applies if you manually relist. If you only sell true single-quantity items, set Number of sales to the count you plan to relist, not your total sales. Most Etsy sellers mix both styles, so check your auto-renew settings in Shop Manager.
What's the difference between the transaction fee and payment processing?
The transaction fee is Etsy's 6.5% cut on each sale (technically applied to item price plus shipping; this calculator uses sale price only). Payment processing is the separate fee Etsy Payments charges for handling the card transaction: 3% + $0.25 per sale in the US. Both apply on the same sale and together they form the bulk of Etsy's fees on most orders.
What are Offsite Ads, and how do the three participation modes differ?
Offsite Ads are Etsy-managed ads that run on Google, Facebook, Instagram, Bing, and Pinterest. When a buyer clicks one of those ads and buys from your shop within 30 days, Etsy charges an Offsite Ads fee on the order. Pick a participation mode in the calculator: Excluded models no Offsite Ads cost. Standard 15% models the small-shop optional path, where shops below Etsy's annual sales threshold can opt in and pay 15% on referred sales. Mandatory 12% models the high-sales path, where shops at or above the threshold are required to participate at the discounted 12% rate. Enter the share of sales you actually expect from Offsite Ads, not 100% by default. Etsy's thresholds and rates may change.
Does this include currency conversion or VAT?
No. If your shop sells in a currency other than your payout currency, Etsy typically charges a currency conversion fee of about 2.5%. EU and UK shops also deal with VAT collection and remittance rules, which Etsy handles for digital goods to EU buyers but not in every case. Neither is modeled here. Add 2.5% to your effective rate as a rough adjustment if conversion applies, and check Etsy's tax pages for VAT specifics.
Is Etsy good for digital downloads?
Etsy is competitive for digital downloads when discovery on Etsy itself drives a meaningful share of sales, since one listing can sell many copies. Note that with auto-renew on, each sale of that listing triggers another $0.20 listing fee on top of the transaction and payment fees. The combined per-sale fee (transaction + payment + auto-renew $0.20) is higher than direct platforms like Gumroad or Payhip on a per-sale basis, so the trade-off is marketplace traffic vs. lower fees. Compare with the Platform Take-Home Calculator at your real sales volume.
How does Etsy compare to Gumroad or Payhip for digital products?
On a $29 sale with auto-renew on, Etsy's per-sale fee (6.5% transaction + 3% + $0.25 payment + $0.20 auto-renew listing) is roughly $3.21 (about 11.1%), excluding any initial listing fee or Offsite Ads. Gumroad direct sales cost 10% + $0.50, or $3.40 on the same sale. Payhip Free costs 5% only ($1.45) but excludes payment processing. The Platform Take-Home Calculator shows all of these side-by-side at your sales volume.

Sources and assumptions
- US shop selling in USD via Etsy Payments.
- Listing fee: $0.20 per listing. The same $0.20 applies to the initial listing (valid for 4 months or until sold) AND to Etsy's automatic renewal on sale (auto-renew). This calculator models both as (Active listings + Number of sales) * $0.20.
- Auto-renew on sale: Etsy automatically renews a listing each time it sells, which triggers another $0.20 listing fee. Sellers can disable auto-renew, but it is on by default for most shops.
- Transaction fee: 6.5% of the sale price (Etsy applies it to the item plus shipping; this calculator uses sale price only).
- Payment processing: 3% + $0.25 per transaction for US debit and credit cards through Etsy Payments.
- Offsite Ads: pick a participation mode. Excluded uses 0% (no Offsite Ads cost). Standard uses 15% on referred sales for shops below Etsy's annual sales threshold (optional opt-in). Mandatory uses 12% on referred sales for shops at or above the threshold (mandatory participation). Etsy's thresholds and rates may change.
- NOT included: currency conversion (typically 2.5% for non-USD shops), VAT, sales tax, Etsy Plus or Pattern subscriptions, Etsy Ads (the pay-per-click promoted listings, which are separate from Offsite Ads), and shipping costs themselves.
